What Are Common Signs And Symptoms Of Epilepsy?

Symptoms can vary from person to person and they usually depend on the type of seizure. Many people have the same type of seizures each time, experiencing similar symptoms from one seizure to the next.

Because epilepsy is caused by a problem in the electrical function of the brain, seizures can affect any part of the body that your brain controls. Some of the more common signs and symptoms of a seizure are:

  • Staring into space
  • Feeling “spacey” or confused

  • Uncontrollable stiffening or jerking of the muscles
  • Falling down suddenly
  • Loss of bladder or bowel control
  • Unusual smells, tastes, or feelings
  • Times of forgetfulness or memory lapses
  • Headaches
