Red Flags for Genetic Neurological Disorders

There may be certain patterns in your family that make it more likely that your neurological disorder is genetic (or caused by a gene mutation). Some of these patterns include:

  • Several closely-related family members with the same or very similar symptoms
  • Symptoms of a common neurological disorder that begin earlier in life than what is typical for that disorder
  • Neurological problems in children of parents who are closely related

If you recognize any of these patterns in your own family history, you should share this information with your healthcare provider so that you can discuss it further. Genetic testing might be helpful to determine the cause of your symptoms and to guide management recommendations.
